FROGCAST expands its multimodel mix with two new high-resolution models

Table of Contents

At FROGCAST, our mission is simple: deliver reliable, actionable weather forecasts tailored to professional use cases. To do so, we already combine more than 20 numerical weather prediction (NWP) models in a continuously refined multimodel mix, weighting each one against its proven real-world performance.

Today, we’re expanding that mix with two new additions: ICON-2I and HARMONIE-NEA. Both bring higher spatial resolution and faster refresh cycles to our ensemble, strengthening forecast accuracy across Italy and Northern Europe and broadening the diversity of atmospheric perspectives our probabilistic engine draws from.

Why expand our multimodel mix?

No single weather model captures the full picture. Each one encodes a distinct interpretation of the atmosphere, shaped by its own data assimilation method, spatial resolution, and forecast horizon. Gaps and biases are inevitable.

That’s why FROGCAST combines them. By broadening FROGCAST’s multimodel mix with two new high-resolution models, we further narrows uncertainty bounds and tightens confidence intervals, enabling our clients across energy, logistics, agriculture, and insurance to make faster, better-grounded operational decisions.

Introducing ICON-2I and HARMONIE-NEA

ICON-2I — Italy (DWD / Cineca)

Map illustrating the geographic area covered by the ICON-2I high-resolution weather model.
  • Geographic coverage: Italy
  • Forecast horizon: Up to 72 hours for the main run (00:12 UTC), plus 24 hours for other runs
  • Native resolution: 0.02° (~2 km)
  • Run frequency: Every 3 hours
  • Forecast time step: 1 hour

ICON-2I captures mesoscale phenomena (valley winds, sea breezes, orographic precipitation) that coarser global models systematically miss. Its 2 km grid makes it particularly valuable for renewable energy siting, hydrological risk, and precision agriculture in complex Italian topography.

HARMONIE-NEA — Denmark (DMI)

  • Geographic coverage: Denmark and surrounding regions
  • Forecast horizon: Up to 60 hours
  • Native resolution: 0.02° (~2 km)
  • Run frequency: Every 3 hours
  • Forecast time step: 1 hour

HARMONIE-NEA strengthens FROGCAST’s coverage across the North Sea and Baltic coastal regions (critical zones for offshore wind, maritime routing, and Nordic infrastructure). Its frequent update cycles and convection-permitting resolution significantly improve nowcasting reliability in this operationally demanding area.

What this means for FROGCAST users

With ICON-2I and HARMONIE-NEA integrated into the ensemble, probabilistic forecasts gain additional diversity at the local scale, which statistically reduces spread in confidence intervals and improves both short-range precision and medium-range reliability. All improvements propagate automatically through the FROGCAST API, with no changes required on the client side: same endpoints, same integration, better data.

Users in Italy and Northern Europe will see the most immediate impact, while the broader model diversity benefits confidence interval quality globally.
